Method One: For those new to astrophotography, it is ideal for editing your images in a single piece of software. To edit your Milky Way photos, use Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, or Capture One.

Method Two: To complete the editing process, use different software programs. This procedure is more sophisticated, but it can also give superior results. Lightroom will be required for fundamental changes, and Photoshop for more sophisticated work.

Edit With Lightroom

Lightroom is an excellent choice for beginners primary picture editing software. It has many of the same tools and capabilities as Adobe Camera Raw (ACR), but it is much easier to master. It enables batch editing of RAW files.

Adjust White Balance

One of the most important things to remember when editing Milky Way images is to correct the white balance. This ensures that the colors and tones in your photos are accurate. The color temperature of a photograph is determined by its white balance. It affects your image’s sky and stars, making them look more natural or unnatural depending on how much you change them.

This is a great moment to double-check your histograms. The histogram displays the tonal range of your image (dark and light). Click on the “Show Highlight Clipping” icon or hit J on your keyboard. The idea is to have no sections of your image that are entirely black or white.

Tone down Highlights and Shadows

Highlights are the regions of your image that are the brightest, while Shadows are the darkest. You’ll want to tweak these settings to ensure that your photo’s highlights and shadows look natural.

Increase the Highlights and Whites to provide additional detail to star spots. Reduced shadows and blacks will make your image’s sky sections more noticeable. This will assist in concentrating attention on the starry night sky.

Adjust Clarity and Dehaze

Clarity and Dehaze are excellent techniques for enhancing image quality. The amount of detail visible in an image is defined as its clarity. It raises the contrast between distinct tones in an image, making it appear sharper. Dehaze is more effective in removing haze or fog from photos. However, it can also be used to create milky way images. It makes the sky and stars appear brighter and more distinct.

There are several methods for removing noise from your images. The simplest way is to use Lightroom’s built-in noise reduction feature. To do so, navigate to the Develop Module (in Lightroom). Then, to your liking, change the amount of noise reduction.

You can use a plugin like Nik Dfine to gain more control over the process. This plugin is compatible with both Photoshop and Lightroom. It gives you more noise-removal options, such as how much detail you want to keep.

Another approach is to utilize a third-party product, such as Topaz DeNoise AI, which has many choices and settings to play with. It’s also available as standalone software or a Photoshop and Lightroom plugin. It’s simple to use and available for both Mac and Windows.

Correct lens distortion

Wide-angle lenses frequently exhibit lens distortion. The Lens Correction tool in Lightroom can be used to rectify it.

Select your camera model, click “Lens Corrections,” and check the “Enable Profile Corrections” option.

You can manually change the distortion and vignette if the profile does not match your lens.

Enhance Details in Photoshop

Remove sensor dust

To use the patch tool, choose the area to be repaired and then click on a clean image region (not another dust spot). This will make a duplicate of that area that you can use as a patch to cover the issue area.

You can use the clone stamp tool to eliminate the others if you have more than one dust spot. Make sure that you have chosen a dust-free location. Then, paint over the dust spot using a little brush and another portion of the image. This will hide it, but it will have a little different texture than the rest of your image.

Adjust Curves

The curves tool in Adobe Photoshop CC is a helpful tool for adjusting your photo’s contrast and brightness. To use curves to boost contrast, go to Image > Adjustments > Curves or press Ctrl-M on your computer.

Click on the diagonal line from the lower left to the top right in the dialog box. In this region, a little cursor will emerge. Drag it up slightly, then down to form a little S-curve. This raises the contrast in your image without making it appear overly dark or light.

Add detail with image stacks
